More Than a Library: How to Configure StackMap to Map Your Law School

Adam Harness

Last year, I saw a demonstration about StackMap. Our library is only one floor, so I couldn’t justify the cost of mapping software for only a small part of our school. However, as the demonstration went on, I suddenly had an idea. Could we configure StackMap to map out our entire school? While I didn’t like the interface, I knew that I had stumbled onto an idea that could solve other issues in the school. Our security and staff were constantly being bombarded by questions from lost students and visitors, such as “Where are the bathrooms?” or “What room is Constitutional Law II in again?” Although our school is not a large building, I repeatedly heard students complain that everything in the school was so hard to find.

Over the next year, I configured StackMap to help with these issues. Since the interface provided by StackMap is not set up to handle what I was using the software for, I created my own interface, one for the law school and a more specialized one for the library. Each interface is designed to help students, staff, and visitors in locating what they are looking for. The interfaces can show what classes are in which rooms, where the restrooms are located, where to find a book on criminal law, etc. During this session, I will demonstrate how I configured StackMap to handle all of the different areas of the law school, the custom interfaces I built to make StackMap more user-friendly, and some of the code I am using to create the functions built into the interface, such as daily class schedules.
