We often think we know our law students, but how well do we understand who is coming to us for legal education? An unknown of #legaled is often who are these learners, what motivates them, and how should we factor these things into our teaching? Legal education should be learner focused. discovering who is applying to law school, who is actually attending, what factors play into their decisions, and what trends look like in terms of admissions and matriculation are key pieces to shaping legal education.
While each individual school may be able to collect information on their specific students, LSAC provides important insight into what law students across the country look like, and what this might mean for the legal profession. For the first time, LSAC has consolidated years of data in a public report to help answer these questions. Join us for a sneak peek into LSAC’s data collection, such as who our current law students are – what are their demographics (such as gender, age, race and ethnicity, sexual orientation, parent education, socioeconomic status), why they chose to apply to law school and the factors that might prevent them from attending, what types of things are they worried about, and what resources they wish they had. this session will also offer insight into what all this information means for how students consume information and how legal educators might best connect to major motivating factors that drive these students.
