All of my courses, doctrinal and writing courses, incorporate both formative and summative assessments spread throughout the term. Setting and enforcing due dates and deadlines for any type of assessment poses various advantages and challenges. In this session I will share intended and unintended consequences of setting firm, lax and no deadlines for different types of courses. In particular, I will highlight a recent “experiment” in a large doctrinal class, giving students a choice to treat CANVAS quizzes as either quasi-formative or summative.
